New Book on Parasites

Dr. Nemanja Marković, first GACT Visiting Researcher in Tübingen, has published a new book co-authored with Dr. Slavica Dacić. Co-published by the Institute of Archaeology and the Belgrade Research Society, this is the first book in Serbian science—and the broader Balkan region—dedicated to the methodology for studying parasitic infections in humans and animals in the past. Titled Paleoparasitology: A Methodology for Researching Parasitic Infections in the Past, the publication represents a pioneering contribution to the field in Western Balkans.

Dr. Marković is a Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Archaeology, and Dr. Dacić is a Specialist in Microbiology with Parasitology at the Institute for Public Health of Serbia „Dr. Milan Jovanović Batut.“ This book is expected to become a fundamental reference for researchers in archaeology—particularly bioarchaeology—as well as in paleontology throughout the Central and Western Balkans, where paleoparasitological research is still in its early stages of development.

The publication is partially supported by the project Parasitism and Pleistocene Human Palaeoenvironment in the Western Balkans: Establishing a Multidisciplinary Protocol, funded by the Leibniz ScienceCampus Geogenomic Archaeology Campus Tübingen (GACT). Dr. Marković is conducting this research under the supervision of Professor Dr. Cosimo Posth.
